August 2011 Ask Maureen Taylor Teleclinic
1. "With everything going digital, what can be done to convince me and others that it's worthwhile to print some photos on actual paper to be kept in a dark (box, album, etc.) so they last. Color photos from the 50s look bad today. B&W from the 30s haven't changed a bit. Digital from 2011 will be completely gone when the hard drive fails..."
2. "What do you consider to be the best software to work with old photos - touch-up, improving prints, etc.?"
3. "Where do I begin to look for archival photo paper and protectors? "
4. "How do you support a photo on cardstock?"
5. "I have been given hundreds of old family photos. As I remove them from the damaging albums they came in and scan them, is it safe to put them in manila envelopes for storage? I have been storing the contents of each album in its own envelope. I thought I read somewhere that those envelopes were acceptable storage but I want to know for sure."
6. "My in-laws made slide copies of all family photos. I want copies - Do I scan from original photos or use their slides to make my copies? "
7. "I have a small photo from (I think) the early 1800's that is torn in half. What is the best way to repair it? "
8. "Since many male children were dressed in female clothing, how can you be sure what the sex of the child was? "
9. "I need to know how to get the pictures off of the discs from the disc cameras. "
10. "I have a photo of two men, either brothers or father and son, with beards that are long and split. . . these men were rural farmers in Portland, Ontario, in the late 1800s. Can you estimate the date of the photo? One of the men died in 1906."
11. "If you don't know the names in the pictures and no one does either what do you do? "
